Silly statement by Pelosi

Venezuelan strongman Chavez has shut down an independent Venezuelan TV station. In response, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said:

"President Chavez should know that efforts to suppress the media will not only ultimately fail, but are also a detriment to one of the pillars of democracy: freedom of expression"

Many governments successfully suppress all independent media. Contrary to what Pelosi said, there is no reason to think that Chavez's efforts to suppress the media will fail. In fact, given Chavez's inane economic policies, his best bet to stay in power is indeed to suppress all independent media in Venezuela.
