U.S. to pay French Carbon Tax?

The French President "has demanded that the United States sign both the Kyoto climate protocol and a future agreement that will take effect when the Kyoto accord runs out in 2012.

But he warned that if the United States did not sign the agreements, a carbon tax across Europe on imports from nations that have not signed the Kyoto treaty could be imposed to try to force compliance."

Well, if the French want to tax the U.S. for engaging in "bad" behavior we could do the same to them. How about we impose a pharmaceutical tax on the Europeans for putting price controls on drugs and thereby greatly reducing pharmaceutical research. (I wrote more about this here.) Or we could impose a defense tax on France for spending so little on defense and thereby relying on the U.S. to protect democracy.
