Why Economists Support the Minimum Wage
Unfortunately, many economists support the minimum wage. As these quotes show it's because they think it will reduce inequality.
I find this hard to understand. Yes, in the short run the minimum wage causes some people to receive higher salaries. In the long run, however, I believe that minimum wages increase income inequality. First, as I argue here the minimum wage causes companies to cut down on advancement opportunities.
The minimum wage also prevents some of the lowest skilled workers from getting jobs. These jobs would have helped them gain skills allowing them to eventually get even better jobs.
