McCain, NAFTA and the Mexican-American vote
Obama and Clinton blame NAFTA for the loss of many U.S. manufacturing jobs. They both pledge to force Mexico to renegotiate NAFTA on the threat of the U.S. withdrawing from the treaty.
McCain should argue that such a pledge is racist. He should claim that high taxes, stupid regulations and pork induced deficits are responsible for destroying many U.S. manufacturing jobs. Yet rather than accepting responsibility for this, Obama and Clinton instead blame the problem on Mexicans. So Clinton and Obama pledge to reduce contact with Mexico unless Mexico submits to their demands.
McCain should stress that NAFTA is vital to the Mexican economy and every serious economist thinks that the treaty helps our economy. Yet to score cheap political points with people who dislike and fear Mexicans, Clinton and Obama want to impose their imperialistic will on Mexico and gut the country's economy.
McCain should also point out that if Mexicans can't make goods for the U.S. in Mexico then many will illegally cross into the U.S. Abrogating NAFTA, therefore, will increase illegal immigration.
