Government Travel Expenses

From Fox News "Federal employees wasted at least $146 million over a one-year period in business- or first-class airline tickets bought in violation of travel policies, congressional investigators say."

Since federal employees don't have to pay for their travel costs they have a natural incentive to spend too much. What the government should do is mandate that all federal employees must pay, say, 15% of the cost of all their travel, even when traveling on government business. This would cause federal employees to take far more care when spending taxpayer dollars. It would be interesting to see by how much travel expenditures went down if this proposal were enacted.
