Bloomberg Can Win

Unlike Instapundit I think that Bloomberg could win mainly because of how much each party hates each other. Let's say, for example, that Hillary Clinton and Fred Thompson win their parties' nominations. If they both have equal strength than Bloomberg would have no chance. But let's say that Hillary is clearly winning and one month before the general election Republicans believe that Thompson has almost no possibility of winning. I can easily see many prominent Republicans switching to support Bloomberg as their only chance of stopping Hillary. And once a few big name Republicans do this, Thompson will go way down in the polls and so more Republicans will support Bloomberg. Thompson might then even decide to suffer an honorable defeat and endorse Bloomberg himself.

Similarly, If Hillary looks like she has no chance of winning then people like the Daily Kos crowd might decide that it's far better that Bloomberg than a Republican win and so they would switch to Bloomberg. This would push Hillary down further in the polls and cause all Republican-haters to support Bloomberg. The race would then appear to be only between Bloomberg and Thompson.

Bloomberg would be nearly all Republican and Democrats' second choice. Thus, if either the Republican or Democratic candidate looks like a loser, Bloomberg will pick up a huge amount of support.
