Why did God allow this to happen?

One of my favorite novels is The Worthing Saga by Orson Scott Card. It tries to answer the question "If God is loving why does he allow such horrible things to occur?" One answer is that tragedy gives humans an opportunity to prove their greatness. I guess this story supports Card's thesis.
