Blacks, Kidney Markets and School Choice
"Kidney disease, which is often associated with diabetes, is an epidemic among black Americans. 'We all know someone who needs kidneys,' the Rev. Nelson "Fuzzy" Thompson a local civil-rights activist [said]"
I wonder if this explains in part why politicians block free trade in kidneys.
The U.S. government forbids people from selling kidneys. This creates a huge shortage of kidneys which kills many Americans.
You would think that people harmed by this shortage would put pressure on politicians to allow the buying and selling of kidneys. And since blacks are disproportionately harmed by kidney shortages, their political leaders should be the primary proponents of kidney markets.
Black Americans, however, often support candidates on the political left, and left-wing politicians tend to be suspicious of markets. Political organizations which represent blacks also tend to dislike free markets. Consequently, it's unlikely that black political leaders would advocate for a free market in kidneys even though such a market would disproportionately benefit blacks. And if the group that would most benefit from kidney markets doesn't push for them, it becomes politically very difficult for kidney markets to be legalized.
The same logic explains why there isn't more political support for school choice. School choice would most help black Americans, but since black leaders are suspicious of markets they mostly oppose school choice. Consequently, school choice proposals aren't championed by their natural constituency.
